'Ophelia' by The Lumineers is the first song in their very famous storyline, "The Ballad of Cleopatra", which contains songs from their album "Cleopatra" and follows the story of a taxi driver named Cleopatra (duh!). Though the names keep changing (here, Ophelia), the ballad follows the story of the same person, Cleopatra.
The song video for 'Ophelia' begins with the band performing on stage right after which the lead singer, Wesley Schultz (The Narrator), steps out of his own body and into an alternate reality giving us the idea of what the ballad is all about. Cleopatra is often seen stepping out of her body to lead a different life, a life she wished she could have lived.
Schultz becomes the narrator of "The Ballad of Cleopatra" and puts forward the point of view of a guy (The Lover) who fell in love with a girl (Cleopatra).
The lyrics say
"Oh, Ophelia, you've been on my mind girl since the flood
Oh, Ophelia, Heaven help the fool who falls in love"
suggesting that The Lover fell hard for this Cleopatra girl and can't seem to get her off his mind. Cleopatra loves him too ("Honey I love you, that's all she wrote"), has big plans, and expects a great deal from her future.
This song is nothing but The Lover confessing his love for Cleopatra and all of this is just revealed to us by The Narrator in the song but at the end of the song, Schultz enters a cab and starts conversing with the taxi-driver (guess who?), a middle-aged woman. This is where we meet our protagonist Cleopatra for the first time and so her story begins.
Fun Fact: "The Ballad of Cleopatra" is inspired by a real-life story of an elderly female named Cleopatra, whom the guitarist and the lead singer of the band met during a trip to the Republic of Georgia.
